“I have only to break into the tightness of a strawberry, and I see summer – its dust and lowering skies.”  So well put by author Toni Morrison.  One could argue that the same goes for biting into some juicy watermelon?  As we anticipate the new season, we naturally begin to plot for our barbecues and picnics and the food and drinks which will round out such seasonal festivities.  A big thanks to Laura Sorkin, Co-Founder of Runamok Maple, the Vermont-based maker of all-natural, organic maple syrup, including a collection of barrel-aged, smoked, and infused maple syrups, for sharing with us this refreshing twist on a summertime classic. Watermelon-Infused Slushies incorporates the brand’s flavored Makrut Lime-Leaf Maple Syrup or Hibiscus-Infused Maple Syrup – the choice is yours!

Of the signature slushies says Laura, “These oh-so-tasty and very simple; just puree watermelon with lemon and mix it with either of our infused maple syrups. Each flavor results in a very different drink, but both are so good in their unique way. The Hibiscus sends the watermelon into berry-flavored territory while the Makrut Lime-Leaf and watermelon seem to be made for each other.  Enjoy!”

Watermelon Infused Slushie
3 cups cubed, seedless watermelon
2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
2 Tbsp Runamok Maple’s Makrut Lime-leaf or Hibiscus Infused Maple Syrup

Puree the watermelon and lemon juice in a blender.

Add the Makrut Lime-leaf or Hibiscus Infused maple syrup to taste (I gave 2 Tbsp as a suggestion but the sugar content varies quite a bit in fruit so add to your liking).

Serve over ice.
